Your website will need a domain, or address, where people can find and visit your site. If you’ve never had a website before, the idea of getting a domain might seem like it’s going to be difficult or involve a technical aspect that you might not understand.

I am very happy to tell you that you are quite wrong about that! Let me show you how easy and stress-free getting a domain for your Bookmark website is.

After choosing a template for your website, getting a domain is the next step. You will be presented with the Select Domain window:

There are three options:

Let’s take you through these choices.

Option 1: Use a Subdomain of Bookmark

The easiest way to get started is to use a subdomain of Bookmark. It’s free and requires no further set-up. All you need to do is type the domain name you want into the box, and as long as you get a green highlighted section you’re good to go!

Good to go:

Sorry, this subdomain is not available:

Wait, what’s a sub-domain?

A subdomain refers to a domain that is an extension of another domain name, in this case, bookmark.com. Subdomains of Bookmark will end with “.bookmark.com” instead of just “.com”. Subdomains are usually offered free of charge since they perform an advertising function for the hosting service.

What if I’m not sure what domain name to use?

Using a subdomain is a great option if you just want to get started building your website while giving some more thought to what domain name you want to use. There is no cost, commitment, or hassle involved in setting up or changing your subdomain at any time.  You can use a placeholder subdomain to get started and then update your domain name later. (We recommend making domain name changes before publishing your website, so you don’t confuse your visitors.)

I’ve decided to use a subdomain. Now what?

Once you’ve typed in your domain name, and see the section highlighted green, all you need to do is click the Continue button at the bottom. Bookmark will create your website using the template you chose earlier, and you can get started with customizing it!

That’s it! No hassle, no further set-up required. You’re all finished!

Option 2: Register a New Domain

Registering a new domain is a great option if you don’t want “bookmark.com” as part of your website’s address, and you don’t already own a domain name. You don’t have to go anywhere else to buy your domain name - Bookmark can handle that for you, and we’ll even give you your first year of domain hosting for free if you upgrade to one of our yearly plans.

Registering a new domain is a Bookmark Pro feature, so if you are currently on the free plan, you will be asked to upgrade to Pro during the set-up.

Click the button for the second option, type in your desired domain name, and if the section is highlighted in red the domain is not available, and you will need to search for a domain name that is available before being able to proceed to the next step. When the section is highlighted green the domain is available and you can click Continue to proceed to the next step.

Our guide Registering a domain through Bookmark walks you step-by-step through the rest of the process.

Option 3: Connect a domain you already own

If you’ve already purchased a domain name through another provider like GoDaddy, Wordpress, Google Domains, or another domain registrar, choose the bottom option.

Connecting a domain you already own is a Bookmark Pro feature, so if you are currently on a free plan, you will be asked to upgrade to Pro during the set-up.

This option will require you to make some changes to your account with your domain provider to point your domain name to Bookmark.  Please see our guide Connecting a domain purchased elsewhere for more information.
