Important: You may use a domain purchased elsewhere for your Bookmark website provided that you subscribe to one of our membership plans.

In order to connect a domain that you already own to your Bookmark website you just need to make a few changes to your Domain Host.

You will need to edit the domain’s DNS records which will look something like this:

If you are a tech-savvy individual, and that makes sense to you, go ahead and make the change on your domain registrar’s website.

If you’re like the rest of us, and that seems confusing to you, don’t worry. You have two options.

We recommend this option if you don’t speak geek or really cringe at the thought of changing your own settings. You can contact your domain registrar (such as Wordpress, GoDaddy, Google Domains, etc.) through their “Contact Us” option on their website.

Here’s what you need to tell them to substitute your actual domain name where it says “mydomainname” below:

Hello:

I would like your assistance with a change to my domain details with your service.

I would like to point my domain to a website I’ve made at Bookmark.com (a website builder). This means I need to change my A-Record to point to the Bookmark.com IP address for my root domain which is and the CNAME www to point to ns.bookmark.com

Could you please change the A-records for:

A Record to point to 54.191.83.178

And

CNAME record for WWW to point to NS.BOOKMARK.COM

This is not a request to transfer; I want to keep you as my domain registrar.

It can take as long as 48 hours for your host’s servers to update with the change, although it is usually only a matter of a couple of hours. Please be patient, as there is nothing you (or we at Bookmark) can do to speed up this process. The domain will start working again as soon as their updates are complete.

In order to create a website on Bookmark using the domain name you’ve already purchased, you will need to point your existing domain to the Bookmark IP address.

There are two hostnames you need to re-direct:

Open your domain registrar’s website and log in to your account.

A good place to start is in “My Account” or “Manage Account”. Or, if you see an option for “My Domains” or “Domains”, try looking in there as well.

Within Account or Domains, you will be looking for something that allows you to change or edit the DNS or Zone Files. This might be an “Edit Domain” option, or you might have luck looking in Advanced Settings if you don’t see it right away.

Tip: If you can’t find it, don’t sweat it - just go back up to Option 1 above and contact your registrar to ask them to do it for you. They will know exactly how to do it in a flash, and save you a big headache.

Make sure that you are looking at the “A Records”. You might also see “CNAME” or “AAAA” records, but don’t change them! You can verify that you’re changing the A Record by looking at the column/setting for “Type”. It should just say “A”.

Once you’ve double-checked that you’re in the A Records area, the next thing to look for is the Hostname.

Sometimes, as in the sample above, the registrar will list the hostnames as “@” and “www”. This is a generic way of specifying your domain name. The hostname “@” represents yourdomain.com, and the hostname “www” represents www.yourdomain.com. (substituting your actual domain name for “yourdomain”, of course). Your registrar may actually specify your domain name instead of using * or www.

Now that you’ve double-checked that you are in the right place, it’s time to change the IP Address for the two hostnames (* and www) in your A Records.

The IP Address is the set of numbers separated by periods, usually denoted as “Points to”. It could also be called “Destination” or “Data”.

Click in the IP Address’ text box and change the numbers to Bookmark’s IP Address: 54.191.83.178.

Double-check that you have entered the correct sequence of numbers separated by periods.

Finally, be sure to click the Save or Update button to save the change.

And remember, the domain could take up to 24 hours to be fully connected.
